Fed up With the old stuff? Fancy something new and invigorating? New bands looking for someone to love and cherish them are plentiful. On a rocky tip try lkara Colt. Hell Is For Heroes. Hundred Reasons or Edinburgh‘s own Degrassi. all bOund to have debut albums out this year. Another Edinburgh son of note is Joseph Malik. who releases his debut album for German leftfield label of distinction. Compost Records. in the spring. DJ Vadim (Sep). Cinematic Orchestra (Apr) and Mr Scruff (summer) all have platters that will surely matter. as will Nightmares On Wax (spring). Broadcast (spring) and the luminous tones of DJ Shadow WI“ be heard again by summer time.
Festival season is pretty much all year round now (check out our festivals panel) but lest we forget Big Big Country in early May and Le Weekend later that month. Live ’N’ Loud is in June. and with Big Big World's arrival in October. before you know it we'll be doing all this again.

problem will be not looking back in anger.
Last year it lost its core Aussie soap Home And Away to Channel 5 but when it glances at the BBC's biggest draw for the upcoming year, its powers- that-be will be fuming.
Auf Medersehen, Pet made its mark on the ITV landscape between 1983-86 but when the British brickies announced their return. it was with BBCt. Considering most of the original cast have moved on to even bigger things (asides from the dead one) it’s remarkable that Timothy Spall. Jimmy Nail and Kevin Whately have agreed to relive their cowboy days. A clear indication of the massive pull the show still has.
The events of 30 January 1972 will flood horribly back when two dramas about Bloody Sunday are broadcast. Sunday (Channel 4) written by Jimmy McGovern goes head to head with Bloody Sunday (Scottish) starring James Nesbitt.
On the comedy front. we heartily welcome back a second series of The Office (8802, summer), Shooting Stars (BBC2. Jan) bids farewell to Mark Lamarr with Will Self stepping in to the breach. Harry Hill moves from C4 to ITV with his All New Show (spring) while March welcomes back two top Channel 4 comedies. Black Books and The Mark Thomas Product.
Quality literary adaptations ahead include Tony Marchant‘s take on Crime And Punishment (8802. Feb) starring John Simm. a top secret project of Zadie Smith's sprawling London tale White Teeth (Channel 4. autumn) and Man And Boy, the Tony Parsons bestseller. starring loan Gruffudd. lTV‘s reaction is The Forsyte Saga (spring). a compilation of the novels by John Galsworthy starring the excellent Gina McKee.
Original dramas include Murder (BBCZ. autumn) starring Julie Walters as a grieving mother who takes the law into her own hands. The series is written by Abi Morgan whose 77ny Dynamite performed well at last year‘s Edinburgh Fringe. Anna Friel returns to small screens with conspiracy thriller Fields Of Gold (BBCf. May) and the great Sally Phillips makes her starring debut as a lovelorn magazine journo in Rescue Me (BBCt. Feb). And we’ve all got our fingers crossed that The Sopranos (Channel 4) fourth series will hit back by the end of the year.
Good old Channel 5 gets the candles out for its fifth birthday party on 31 March (has it really been so long?) while Home And Away celebrates its 3,000th episode on 22 February. On the unconfirmed rumour front. Johnny Vaughan may be back with a new chat show and Joanna Lumley is to star in a Marion & Geoff relationship trauma series.
