As part of this year’s Hogmanay celebrations, a computer will host a 2,300- capacity dance event in the covered courtyard of Glasgow’s Merchant Square. On behalf of the organisers, Nation1, a spokesperson has commented that this will be a ‘hip and happening’ party representing a ‘once in a lifetime event for party-goers who want to experience something
different on New Year’s Eve’.
Although it’s in no way expected to end in catastrophe as it did in the apocalyptic Arthur C. Clarke story, the computer hosting ‘2001: A Dance Odyssey’ is also called HAL 9000. The state-of-the-art machine, built in Japan at a cost of 28m, is usually used to monitor efficiency and productivity in a American factory but for one night only, it’s being imported from the US to work clubbers into a frenzy on the biggest night of
the year.
The computer is now taking requests which it will then reorder live into a seamless mix sourced from 1,800 pre-programmed dance tracks. HAL is also gifted in gauging the crowd and will select tunes to suit the mood by measuring variables such as noise level, temperature, movement, humidity,
perspiration and eye movement.
Making his debut appearance as an artificial DJ outside the US, HAL’s unique style will be augmented by a £25,000 sound rig, £12,000 worth of lighting and ten giant screens suspended from the ceiling of the stunning Merchant Square venue. And remember, if at any point during the evening you hear the strains of ‘Daisy Daisy’, quietly make your way to the exit while taking every care not to upset the computer. (Catherine Bromley)
