FESTIVE SEASON ’TIS THE SEASON TO BE 5

Perhaps this is not your idea of a perfect family gathering
gayfllist.co.uk
The Festive Season is a time of joy, dragging Christmas trees home through the snow and sitting in front of log fires with your nearest and dearest - or is it? For some, Christmas and New Year means going home, catching up with relatives and spending quality time with their families, but for many
gay people it’s quite the opposite.
What does going home mean for a gay person? For those who are not yet out it means a time of stresses and strains as you continue to hide your life and feelings from your family. Those who are out can find it fraught with awkwardness if their family don’t understand, walk on egg shells or get ignored. It is not the easiest thing having to sit down to turkey and stuffing with your family, sisters- and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. With a cocktail of tension, arguments and alcohol, it’s hardly surprising that this time of year has the highest number of suicides, domestic violence and
murder cases.
This is why many would rather be with their friends and new families or out on the scene rather than back home choking on their lukewarm sherry with maw, paw and the weans. Thankfully this predicament is recognised within the scene and the majority of venues are open throughout the festivities with plenty of events at Christmas and New Year to keep you full of cheer and knee high in the festive spirit.
In Glasgow, the Revolver bar has put together a great festive menu of parties and celebrations with a traditional Christmas Day when no relatives are allowed, a fantastic crap present swap shop on Boxing Day and a kilted Hogmanay party. Delmonicas camps it up with a range of cheesy and cheeky nights including parties on Christmas Day, Hogmanay and New Year’s Day. If you fancy a little twirl on the dance floor then you can head to Bennet’s which has party nights on both Christmas Eve and Day and its biggest party night of the year on Hogmanay as well as a New Year’s Day knees up. The Polo Lounge and Moda are also offering a plethora of entertainment with a party night on Christmas Eve and a traditional Christmas Day with the Gay Men’s Choir singing your favourite carols. On Hogmanay they will be holding their countdown to 2002 throughout all four
rooms with 0.18, dancing and much merry making.
In Edinburgh, CC Blooms has party after party to bring in both Christmas and New Year, and Planet Out will be carrying on with its usual nights of fun and frolics. Clubwise, Taste is having its ‘Escape Christmas Party’ at the Honeycomb on Christmas Day as well as parties on 30 December and New Year’s Day, with Joy having its big Hogmanay celebrations at the Venue.
Whatever you do, whether you go home or hit the seasonal scene have a cracking Christmas and a fantastic new year. (Jane Hamilton)
