A different venue for Stirling's Christmas show provides an intimate setting for this minimalist production. Instead of the expected razzle-dazzle. this 55- minute play uses mime and a basic set to kick-start the imagination. Original and witty songs lighten the Sinister plot and the cast of three successfully draws the audience into their enchanted world. Yet at this time of year. you can't help but miss a singalong and a sweetie shower. (Mel Geelan)

The ingredients are there but need to be bigger and bolder for this panto really to sparkle. Twists to the traditional tale and a smattering of local jokes make it pertinent to Perth. reflecting a general drive to connect with the audience. Derek McGhie's Buttons works well. and though other things miss the mark. there's a constant sense of fun. If some scenes are over-drawn. top marks to the cast for sustaining their enthusiasm for two and a half hours. (Laura Jukes)

Scrooge is reformed from miser to merry maker when three ghosts descend upon him on Christmas Eve. This adaptation by David Holman is close to the original Dickens classic. producing an alternative Christmas show with a social conscience.

Charity. forgiveness and traditional celebrations overthrow dames and damsels in distress. It's not as entertaining as panto. but the spooky smoke and trap doors keep the youngsters amused. And there are some enthuSIastic performances from the ensemble cast. especially the children. All you need to add is a sprinkling of imagination and you'll be dreaming of a Victorian Christmas too.
