Winner of the 1976 Nobel prize for literature, Saul Bellow has put together a new collection to sate the appetite of his adoring fans. Culled from a variety of sources going back as far as 1951, this is a great opportunity to discover the magical style and prose of one of Canada’s most revered
authors.
Leaving James Wood’s somewhat irritating and pedantic introduction to one side, the collection kicks off with a beautiful tale set in his hometown of Lachine called ‘By The St Lawrence’. With a stunning portrait of family, he gives you a snapshot memory, through the eyes of an old man on a trip down memory lane. Particular incidents, seen by the narrator as a child, are reworked. The heroes of his youth are slowly dismantled with their lies and deception laid bare.
Lauded as one of the great stylists of the 20th century, inviting comparisons to Hemingway and Lawrence, Saul Bellow rarely disappoints. Using an incredible array of rich, decadent vocabulary, you become immersed in each tale, one moment riding atop the prose as you are taken on a car journey, the next stationary, sat at a table as the staccato conversation of family life
ricochets past you.
While Bellow’s graceful ability to tell tales is in no doubt, this collection does leave you feeling cheated at times. The stories start and end too abruptly, suggesting they were once part of a longer piece. This works on most occasions, particularly with ‘Looking For Mr Green’, but sometimes it feels like he’s missed out the best bits. (Aly Burt)
