Very Annie Mary ( 15) 0000 (Sara Sugarman. 2001. UK) Rachel Griffiths. Jonathon Pryce. loan Gruffudd. 104 mins. Annie .‘viary (Griffiths) is the unlucky daughter of mean bully (Pryce). Annie‘s father keeps her as his house slave. denying her the chance to grow up. It is Annie's awkward journey to freedom and to reclaiming her singing voice that provides the poignant. romantic story for this film. The story exists in a strange world that is pan Welsh Valleys-realist and part kooky fairytale. Real depth of character and emotion are reached here. the performances are subtle and warm. and the central character is a real distinctive one-off. Odeon. Kilmarnock.

West Highland (L') (David Hanley. CK. 1960) 30 mins. An unashamed celebration of the countryside through which this line runs. the people it has served. and those who worked on it. It is also a meticulously accurate account of a railway working in the last days of steam. Wonderfully evocative photography. Screening introduced by John Gray. writer and film-maker The Lumiere. Edinburgh.

The Wicker Man (18)”... (Robin Hardy. CK. 1973) Edward Woodward. Britt Ekland. Diane Cilento. Ingrid Pitt. Christopher Lee. 102 mins. A devoutly celibate policeman (Woodward) arrives at a remote Scottish island to investigate a schoolgirl disappearance and becomes involved in local pagan rituals. A Hammer classic. with some extremely scary and erotic moments. MacRobert Arts Centre. Stirling.

Women Talking Dirty ( 15) O.

(Coky Giedroyc. CK. 2001) Gina McKee. Helena Bonham Carter. James Purefoy. 97 mins. Not a provocative expose of phone- sex workers. but a pedestrian 'female friendship' comedy about McKee's shy cartoonist and her extroven best pal (Caner). who winds up as a single mother after being dumped by her French boyfriend. Giedroyc‘s follow-up to Stella Does Tricks is the sort of insubstantial and unambitious work which gives British cinema a bad name. lsla Dewar's script (based on her own novel) awkwardly attempts to mix naturalistic drama with sitcom-humour. but at least cinematographer Brian Tufano photographs Edinburgh with crisp efficiency. whilst McKee plays the dreamin introverted Ellen with sensitive restraint. See review. General release.

The World In 1900 (L') (Various. L'K. 1900) mins. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Screen Archive. this event presents a tour round the early 19th century world via film. Filmhouse. Edinburgh.

0 Zoolander (12) 0000 (Ben Stiller. CS. 2001) Ben Stiller. Owen Wilson. Jon Voight. 89 mins. Developed by Stiller from a character created for TV. Zoolandcr is a gloriously goofy satire on the .\'ew York fashion scene. Crammed with visual and verbal gags. and peppered with celebrity cameos. it strings together a series of trea- surable set pieces. including a ‘walk-off‘ between Stiller‘s Derek Zoolandcr and Wilson‘s blonde upstart Hansel and the explanation as to why the world of fashion is implicated in the last 200 years of American political assassinations. The deadpan lead performance of Stiller is a comic treat: Derek's pouting series of ‘looks'. his snakeskin outfits. his squeaky voice and his terrifying stupidity warrant immediate cult status. See review. General release.
