CONFERENCE
PRIMO LEVI Conference, University of Strathclyde, Fri 16 Nov; Parish Hall, George Street, Glasgow, Sat 17 Nov. My Name is 174517, Ramshorn Theatre, Glasgow, Sat 17 Nov.
Writer genius Primo Levi is one of the few survivors of Auschwitz. He was Jewish at a time when things were out of joint, growing up with fascism in his native Italy and Nazism in Germany. Arrested in 1944, he was handed over to the Nazis and deported to Auschwitz where he became prisoner number 174517. On release he combined a career as a chemist and writer focusing on what Professor Joe Farrell of the University of Strathclyde describes as ‘the most candid, brutally frank, most moving and also the most terrifying of his experiences’, events which he believes are ‘a historic
story told by a writer of genius’.
His story and works, such as the masterpieces If This Is A Man and The Periodic Table, will be discussed at a free two-day conference, open to everyone. There will be a variety of speakers from around the world as well as a ticketed theatre production by Teatro dell’Angolo called My Name Is 174517, at the Ramshorn Theatre. The conference will undoubtedly discuss the ambiguous nature of Levi’s death in 1987 and whether or not it was suicide, a possibility that leads Farrell to describe the writer as
‘Hitler’s last victim’. (Jane Hamilton)
