Born in lidinburgh where he continues to live and work. lnnes was shortlisted for both the Turner and Jerwood Pri/es in 1995. In 1998. he won the Nat West Prize for Painting. lnnes is widely recog- nised for the original contribution he has made to abstract painting. Much of his work employs the technique of removing freshly painted areas of colour tising brush strokes or streams of turpentine. This is his second exhibition at the lngleby (iallery. See llitlist.

Making casts of the insides of ordinary objects. her notorious llUllH' in which the interior of a derelict Victorian house was cast in concrete. was demol- ished amid much controversy in 1993.
She went on to win the Turner Prize later that year. Since then. Whiteread has continued to cast objects including the inside of bath ttibs. wardrobes and whole rooms. This major exhibition. co-organ- ised by the Serpentine Gallery in London shows fifteen major works including two new works of the upper staircase and terracotta floor cast from Whiteread's new home and sttidio. a for- mer synagogue in Bethnal Green.
