INDIE NATIONAL POP LEAGUE
Woodside Social Club. Glasgow, Fri 9 Nov.
‘l’ve lived in Glasgow for quite a while and the indie nights on offer just seem quite lazy,’ says John Hunt, co-founder of the hugely anticipated new indie night National Pop league at the Woodside Social Club. ‘For such a well to do and well respected place, there seems to be nothing and when friends come and visit me and want to go to an underground indie club, I’m
just embarrassed by what’s on offer.’
Hunt is so exited by his new venture he doesn’t stop for air. ‘l’ve been looking to do something like this for a long time,’ he says. ‘l don’t even know how this is going to go down but I’ve had some great feedback already. I was in a record shop the other day seeing if they would stock some of the flyers and the lad behind the counter already knew about the
night and that’s pure word of mouth.’
Hunt is a hurricane of positive feeling, as he spins off and joyously chants on about ‘community focal points’, ‘cliques’, ‘live PAs’, and most obviously the Dome in Tuffnell Park and Sheffield’s superb Off Beat night — both
blueprints for the NFL.
A journalist who graduated from — where else — Sheffield, Hunt, along with DJ partners Carlo Zanotti and Jess McMillan, aims to play what he calls ‘shilly-shallying C86-ish stuff like Talulah Gosh and The Shop Assistants, and lots of noisy stuff like The Telescopes, The Fall and Beach Buggy as well as deft chord-surfing indie-pop like The Field Mice and old punk records and the Aislers Set and the Belles and The Smiths, Dexy’s and of course The Tindersticks for the sad and lonely out there’.
With a DJing background that includes shifts at the venerable Off Beat as well as co-founding similar nights in London, there can be little doubt this fast talking music lover will fill the Woodside to capacity. On the verge of being swept up by his overwhelming enthusiasm, Hunt sums up his Utopian vision of the ideal indie night saying: ‘We just want to try and play beautiful, romantic desperate music you can’t hear anywhere else.’ Bless.
