Sunday is the day of rest, bulky newspapers, culinary indulgence and, most of all, the Arches' month/y Social. Jack Mottram opens a broadsheet and explains the big words to his dullard alter- ego.
Ah, the Social. Amyl-fuelled nights at the Albany, Tom 8. Ed Chemical acting as midwives at the difficult birth of big beat . . . I remember it well. Oh come on. why would we be talking aboot The Heavenly Social? lt finished yonks ago and it was in London. where nothing of great import goes on. No. we are talking about the Sunday Social. Glasgow‘s invaluable miniature festival cum daytime
2 nightclub.
1? Oh, sorry, I was trying to sound cool. What’s new down at the Arches then? Well. after it's
3 traditional summer hiatus. the Social is starting to come into it's own again. As winter takes hold. minds turn to comfy lounging. wilfully eclectic musical selections. state of the art video mixes and delicious bagels. Well. mine does. at least. Cut to the chase, man. What’s on? Sorry. it's hard not to get misty- eyed about one of the city‘s finer experiments in entertainment. This month, alongside Social stalwarts DJ Sidewinder and VJ Tom Heycock. Blue States are set to headline.
And who, pray tell, are they? Well. it‘s more of a one man band. really. Blue States is the brainchild of Andy Dragazis. who loaded tip his sampler in 1997. garnering instant acclaim that was cemented last year with the release of his debut long player. Nothing Changes Under the Sun. With the help of a few chums. he makes dreamy. downtempo organic electronica. all meandering Rhodes keys. somnambulant cinematic breaks. moody hip hop and wonderfully evocative sunshine melodies. Think Air without the sickly sentiment. or a more accessible take on the territory occupied by Boards of Canada. Neato. Anything else? Yup. as ever there's a full line up. with Spaced Out and local types Maxi 5 joining the States on stage.
