POLITICAL STAND-UP

MARK THOMAS - DAMBUSTERS: TALES OF DISSENT .0...

Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Tue 6 & Wed 7 Nov; Cottier Theatre, Glasgow, Thu 8 Nov.

‘Was ‘ilarious’ Some master of understatement once called Mark Thomas 'a man with views'. Actually. he‘s a man with facts. Not ‘pub facts' as Thomas says. but hard facts. the kind that“ sicken you. As with his television show The Mark Thomas Product. Thomas arms himself and us with facts to tell a story of outrageous crimes against humanity. And Thomas wields facts like Cruise missiles.

The facts pertain to the llisu Dam planned for the Tigris River in a Kurdish region of Turkey. the international government-business coalition funding it. the environmental disaster it will cause. the campaign against it and the human rights abuses resulting from that. Here's a few: if the dam is built. 78.000 people will lose their homes and livelihood and the 10.000-year-old town of Hasankeyf will be flooded. The Turkish state sanctions the use of torture. rape and murder. The British government is considering backing the dams UK construction company Balfour Beatty with $200 million guarantee of tax payer's money.

Thomas is a born storyteller. He weaves his staggering encyclopaedic knowledge of the facts of human rights abuses world over into a sprawling tale that's by turns deeply shocking, movrng and funny (as Thomas' human rights lawyer friend said of his torture by Turkish police. ‘Was 'ilarious'). Thomas weaves in the bombing of Afghanistan. not because it's news. but because the Turkish- American pact against Afghanistan is undermining the campaign against llisu. which priOr to 1 1 September was on the brink of victOry.

A Kurdish rape victim told Thomas: ‘You must tell everybody everything.‘ In two hours on stage. he did his best. This IS way beyond mere stand-up.
