Traffic ( 18) 0... (Steven Soderbergh. 1S. 2000) Benicio Del Toro. .Michael Douglas. ('atherine Zeta-Jones. 147 mitts. This atnbitious. multi-Iayered epic dranta exposes the conftision. hypocrisy and sheer ftttility of America's war on drugs. Three interwoven storylines - involving decent cop Del Toro. conservative ()hio judge Douglas. the country's newly appointed new drttg czar. and well-heeled society wife Zeta-Jones show how the drug trade touches and corrupts every level of society on both sides of the t'S-Mexico border. l'sing different film stocks and techniques. Soderbergh provides each of these storylines with a distinct look while linking them with persistent tise of hand-held cameras. which gives the film an air of documentary authenticity and gripping itnmediacy. Intelligent and provocative. 'I‘ntflit: avoids sermonising. but in scene after scene. the message gets through. I'GC Renfrew Street. (ilasgow.
12 Monkeys ( 15) 0000 (Terry Gilliam. IS 1995) Bruce Willis. Brad Pitt. Madeleine Stowe. I29 mitts. A convict from the future is sent to the past to discover the source of a lethal virus that has devastated humanity. btit even he begins to wonder if the images in his head are merely delusions. A complex time-travel fantasy. with liberal subplots and a decent mystery edge. that's lifted by (Iilliam’s ever-brilliant visual skills. It may at times stumble over its own inner logic. bttt it's an odd. eccentric creation that engages the imagination. ()deon. (ilasgow. TWO Or Three Things I Know About Her ( l8) 0.... (Jean-Lite (iodard. France. 1966) Marina Vlady. Anny Duperey. Roger Montsoret. 95 mins. (iodard tnade his film in the mid-60s. when the idea of a young woman prostituting herself for the demands of consttttier disposables and trips abroad still had an air of irony. It’s as readily an aesthetic conceit as tnuch as the reality you'll find today. where the pavements of even the tttost salubrious Parisian areas are littered by numerous young bun/t’eue hookers. Btit what (iodard's film offers isn't so much an out- dated irrelevance. or meaninglessness (thottgh it has no plot to speak of). btit instead a profound tentativeness towards meaning itself. Adam Smith Theatre. Kirkcaldy.
La Vache Et Le President (PG) 0... (Philippe Muyl. France. 2001 ) Bernard Yerles. Florence Pernel. (‘hristine Bujeau. 90 mins. Iiight-year-old Lucas never met his mother; she died in childbirth. leaving his farmer father to raise him with a heavy heart btit lots of love. When a cow on the family farm suffers a similar fate. Lucas steps in to take care of new calf and kindred spirit. Maeva. Btit tragedy strikes in the form of mad cow disease. which threatens the entire herd. including Lucas‘ bovine pal: only a pardon from the French President can save her now. Things get a touch silly when the pair head for Paris. particularly Maeva's inadvertent trip on the Metro. Btit the father and son relationship is touching throughout. as is the underlying message about moving on after the death of a loved one. Filmhouse. I‘dinburgh.

0... (Robert (itiediguian. France. 20111 ) Ariane Ascaride. Jean-Pierre Darrotissin. 132 mins. (iuediguian returns once more to Marseilles with this intimate epic. his most ambitious and tragic work to date. It follows the overlapping paths of various characters: a night-shift worker (Ascaride) desperately tries to care for her heroin-addicted teenage daughter (herself a mother): a middle-aged teacher begins an affair with a young ex-con; while a fortncr docker (I)arrottssin) struggles to make ends meet as a taxi driver. Marseilles is depicted as being beset by racial tensions. social deprivation and munic- ipal corruption. despite the cosmetic efforts of the authorities to rebrand the area as a tourist destination. Frotn the striking opening pan over Marseilles. (iuediguian's film is shot. scored and edited with admirable assur- ance. See preview and review. Filmhouse. Iidinburgh.
