RE—LAUNCH/GUEST DJ DANNY HOWELLS Progression at The Liquid Room, Sat 22 Sep.
Just who you’d put in the DJing premiership is a contentious issue. Tong
gets in for the rhyming slang and for playing consistently dubious records on Radio 1. Tenaglia gets in for the Depeche Mode remixes and the fatigue- defying sets. But how close to promotion is Twilo and Renaissance
resident Danny Howells?
With the Nu Breed album and the Nocturnal Frequencies series under his belt, plus Science Dept’s current single ‘Breathe’ (a collaboration with Nick Trevor), and a residency at Home that was cut short by that club’s closure, Howells seems to be up there with the big boys. But the Hastings born DJ doesn’t think he’s a superstar just yet. ‘I don’t really feel like one,’ he says, making his Monday morning coffee at 6pm. ‘I like it when people say that kind of thing about me, of course, and I do have to pinch myself sometimes. But there are loads of DJs that are a hell of a lot better than
me.
He may be cheerfully self-effacing, but make no bones about it, Progression were glad to get their man. The Edinburgh club are re- launching at The Liquid Room after an unplanned sabbatical caused by Wilkie House’s closure. It’s up to Howells to set things off with a bang. ‘I hope it’s gonna go alright,’ he says. ‘These things usually get a good buzz, a good build-up so there is something to feed off. But I hope I get a long set. I always make it clear to clubs that I want to play for as long as
possible.’
Howells describes his style as ‘deepsexyfuturistictechfunkhouse’, which sounds like he’s either hedging his bets or taking the piss. ‘Not really,’ he says. ‘Although I guess I am taking a dig at people who are bracketing music. A lot of what I play is very housey, even the harder stuff so I’m trying to give people an idea of what I play and what I like. I’ll pack deep house, techno, funky house, whatever in my bag and go with whatever my mood is and whatever the vibe of the place is.’ (James Smart)
