SLEAZY HOUSE CROONER LOUIE AUSTEN Elastik at The 13th Note Club, Glasgow, Wed 26 Sep.
For all the genre’s claims to diversity and experimentation, there are set routes to stardom for the dance music artist, with most tracing a trajectory from DJing to bedroom experimentation before plunging into full scale studio work. Louie Austen doesn’t exactly fit the mould.
For starters, he hit the music scene while disco was still a twinkle in the eye of America’s nightclubs, getting his break in the 605, singing minor roles in musicals in his native Vienna, launching his career as a crooner in Las Vegas, then taking in stints with a Harlem jazz band and crafting a one- man Rat Pack send-up show before returning to the hotel bars of his home town. These days, when most performers pack away the grease paint and steer clear of the spotlight, Austen is helping to craft some of the finest sleazy house cuts to come out of Europe in recent times, thanks to a decidedly unlikely collaboration with Mario Neugebauer and Patrick Pulsinger, two of the leading lights on the Viennese scene.
‘It all started when we met up in a boxing gym,’ Austen says, explaining the genesis of his new-found niche. ‘Mario is a karate fighter, and I was trying to lose my beer belly. We’d met years before in a studio where he was working as a technician and l was hired as voice talent, and at that time he would always be telling me about the tracks he was making, the great music he was writing, so when we met again, I thought, maybe this is
the time to listen to his stuff.’
Before long, the pair produced a long player for Cheap Records, Consequences, before cutting a second with Pulsinger on board, both fusing Austen’s care-worn throaty croon with bang-up-to-date production. The trio’s latest offering, the four track EP Amore, has spawned something of a minor hit in the form of ‘Grab My Shaft’, a distinctly salacious duet with Canadian electro-punk starlet Peaches, complete with lyrics that, as the title suggests, ought not to be repeated in a family magazine.
‘That was the boys’ idea!’ Austen says. ‘I would never have the balls to say those things, I’m not that blunt with the ladies, but you know, that song is a great band arrangement. It has that great dark feel to it and I’m glad to hear people are enjoying it, I sure enjoyed singing it with Peaches.’
Louie Austen, then, is the antithesis of the faceless techno boffin and,
thanks to the unique merger of four decades of showbiz nous with high
calibre house music, his live show looks set to be unmissable.
