SPIT OR SWALLOW
Loire wines.
An increasingly interesting wine producing area for both budget and fine wines is the Loire valley in France. Famous mostly for its summer whites. it does produce reds and roses as well. In fact, there are a wealth of styles from just a few permitted grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc. Chenin Blanc. Cabernet Franc (little brother of the more popular Cabernet Sauvignon), and the delightfully named Melon de Bourgogne.
Domaine de Chevaunet, Sauvignon Touraine 2000 (£4.49 Loire, France) Touraine Sauvignon B!anc is usually wonh anybody‘s fiver. It's simple yet reliable, and often packed full of typical gooseberry and grassy character. This one is no exception and has an added element of white chocolate lurking ab0ut in the background. It's clean, bone dry and fantastic with food. or equally on its own in the garden in the rain.

Rose d’Anjou 2000 (133.79 Loire, France) One of the more famous styles to come out of the Loire valley. this is a clean. refreshing style of rose, ,V miles away from the boiled ; d ’Anj on; sweet style so typical of . supermarket Californian wines. Light rosehip and strawberry flavours tantalise the taste buds with a very slight off-dry character. perfect in the sun but also remarkably well suited to Oriental food as many roses are.
Rosé d 'Anjou
Chateau La Gordonne, rosé 2000 ($24.49 Provence. France) Not from the Loire valley, but a similar style from the heart of Provence and made with ‘hotter‘ climate grapes likes Grenache. Syrah. 1,. Cinsault. Mourvedre. and
~ Tibourenc. This is a little more gutsy than the Anjou but still quite light and fresh with a subtle flinty character. Again, fantastic with eastern cuisine. and robust enough to tackle a Curry.
Sancerre Brochard 2000 (£9.99 Loire. France) The Sancerre appellation is arguably the jewel in the crown of the Loire (Pouilly Fume vies for the title). One of the world's most sophisticated Sauvignon Blancs. it has layer upon layers of complex aromas. It is made with grapes from 30-year-old vines which leads to an intense fruit character of lemon, gooseberries and even a touch of blackcurrant; very unusual for a white wine. One to impress at a dinner party, it really needs food to bring out the best in it. but the results can be stunning. (Gordon Haggarty)
