COMING OF AGE BERNARD MACLAVERTY The Anatomy School (Cape £15.99) 0000

MacLaverty offers absorbing tales of love and sex

It's staggering how much of Catholic Ireland's most feted fiction boils down to a teenage boy's quest to get his leg over. From Joyce's Portrait Of The Artist to Frank McCourt's Angela’s Ashes. the reader cannot truly get closure until our hero has clumsily rummaged around in some willing partiCipant's knickers. Hellfire and damnation may rain down in great. greasy dollops, but at least we've been titillated by that regulation cherry-popping scene.

With The Anatomy School. Bernard MacLaverty makes his protagonists jOurney towards the consummation of the flesh his novel's major narrative thread. though the novel is no less engaging for that. Set in a Catholic boys school in late 6305 Belfast. MacLaverty charts the progress of Martin Brennan, an awkward seventeen-year-old. as he struggles through his final year at school. There are questions aplenty particularly about sex with barely adequate answers being supplied by the priests and his mother's eccentric friends. Instead. Martin relies on the bluff Wisdom of his best mate Kavanagh and dissident new boy Blaise Foley.

While the book's premise is slight. MacLaverty's insight into the mind-set of his teenage characters is faultless. The prose is fluent and unobtruswe and the situations Martin reluctantly finds himself in from tea parties with his elders to resisting the sin of Onan at a Catholic retreat are beautifully observed and laugh-out-loud funny. The only slight weakness is the book's lengthy closing segment. in which Martin finally gets his end away with an Australian backpacker who seems to have wandered off the set of Neighbours. But this IS a minor gripe about an otherwise absorbing book. (Allan Radcliffe)
