ETCHINGS AND PASTELS WHISTLER IN VENICE Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow. until Sat 1 Sep oooo

“The etchings themselves . . . will sell. I don't see how they can help it.‘ noted Whistler of his Venetian etchings of 1879/80, a commission from the Fine Art Society. Printmaking. unlike modesty. was Whistler’s forte. as this exhibition drawn from the Hunterian's extensive archive highlights. The etchings and pastels displayed exude Whistler's enthusiasm and indulgence in his chosen medium.

While printers such as Delatre were admired for their ability to produce almost identical. uniform editions from one plate. Whistler's progressive approach to printmaking exploited the potential of creating different versions of the same scene. Two versions of Nocturne. shown in both the first and fourth state. explore how the effect of mood. atmosphere. different times of day and varying degrees of texture. warmth and tonal contrast was conveyed by Whistler through the inking of the plate (by hand or with muslin). It is intriguing to examine Whistler's technique through comparison of the two Nocturnes. or by looking at the copper plate for The Beggars alongside the etching produced from it.

Flying the flag of ‘art for art's sake'. Whistler's inaccuracy in his portrayal of specific scenes is quirky and humorous in Nocturne the church and campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore are to the right of the dome of Santa Maria della Salute the opposite of their real location. Drawing directly onto the plate it seems probable that Whistler was unconcerned with the reversing effect of printing. concentrating primarily on ‘the look' of a place he believed to have been ‘created

especially for the painter“. (Susannah Thompson)
