SUMMER PRE—CLUB

DIVINE INSPIRATION PRESENTS: SUNSHINE

Bret, weekly Sundays (during Aug).

It’s undoubtedly a tad optimistic to name a club held in a beer garden in Glasgow ‘Sunshine’, even if it is supposed to be the summer, but that’s exactly what

temptation of Bar Brel’s exquisite terrace and beer garden, aspects that Millar recognises as fairly attractive in their own right. ‘During the summer,

promoter and DJ Alan Millar (aka Hush Puppy) has done. ‘In Scotland, we live in a constant state of denial where we hope it isn’t going to rain. But if it does, we just play records that have ‘rain’ in the title and wait until it stops.’ And when the playlist consists of the unerringly summery vibes of Northern soul, funk, jazz, Latin and Hammond organ instrumentals, surely a couple of raindrops can’t dampen the vibe. The line-up of DJs at Sunshine reads like a veritable Northern soul supergroup, with guest appearances from the likes of Scott and Chris from Goodfoot, Andrew Divine and Chris ‘Beans’ Geddes of Belle and Sebastian who Millar hopes will provide a ‘really broad, eclectic selection of music, all very relaxed and

people like the idea of drinking outside. That’s probably why Sunshine has been such a success.’

Sunshine adds its name to the surfeit of events for Glasgow’s Sunday clubber, so that it’s quite conceivable to start with Sunshine at 3pm and end up twelve hours later stumbling out of a city centre club half-forming Monday morning excuses in your dysfunctional brain. ‘I think there’s a different edge to Sunday night clubs,’ surmises Millar. ‘lt’s the end of the weekend and clubs feel they can take a few more chances because people aren’t just wanting to hammer it.’

So whether you’re just out for a quiet Sunday afternoon drink, or looking to spend your pre-club

quite ‘up’. Not background music, but music that’s interesting enough to be in the background and not be dull.’ Aural delights aside, there’s also the
