‘There’s some utter tripe in the charts! You could do an album of farting and it would get to number one if someone put enough money into it!’ You might wonder why DJ Vadim is getting so vexed about the state of the Top 40, given that his music is way left of field of manufactured teenie pop, but it's in his capacity as the label boss who could no longer afford to keep Mark B and Blade that he is venting his spleen. Vadim is happy to see the duo do so well (Mark B is his friend and neighbour in the K-Boro, the London suburb of Kingston which brims with beat-makers), but mistrusts the major labels’ ability to hype and sell bad product. With his Jazz Fudge imprint the hype may be non-existent but the product is definitely dope, a
rare reversal of the status quo.
It is also as a producer that Vadim objects to musical formulas. ‘l’ve spent a lot of time listening to music outside of hip hop, to how people construct songs. I’m trying to create compositions rather than rely on loops.’ This has resulted in two stunning albums on Ninja Tune which have often been tagged as ‘trip hop’, but Vadim believes that ‘the biggest obstacle to music is people giving it names’. His tunes thrill listeners in their use of the unexpected, particularly where vocalists are concerned. ‘Whether I use an MC or a spoken-word poet, they should not be the main focus, but used like any other instrument.’
Vadim carries this deconstructive attitude over into his crafty DJ sets, which mix and match ‘hip hop, jazz, soul, reggae and drum & bass’, and it’s in this capacity that he appears at TNT this month. He’s back on the road in October with the brilliant poetess Sarah Jones, but it’ll be next year before his new album, The Art of Listening, is available. Given his penchant for experimentation, it may well have that farting song on it - but with the farting used like any other instrument, of course. (Neil McMillan)
