DINNER on THE DECKS Bar Soba. fortnightly Thu (next date 9 Aug).
There‘s a magician at my table, giving David Blaine a run for his money and coaxing my scepticism up his sleeve. There‘s a tarot reader somewhere, presumably in the quietest corner demanding a hushed reverence, and we're about to be served a four-course meal of Far Eastern cuisine while a DJ provides a soothing aural backdrop. Yes Sir, Dinner on the Decks is no ordinary clubbing expenence.
Inspired by the Amsterdam supper club. Bed. which as the name suggests is furnished only with beds, Craig Wilde of Aurall and Fruitfly and Brad Stevens of Bar Soba have collaborated to create this interactive dining experience. Aimed at ‘the Clubber who realises that clubbing is not their life‘, Wilde would like the experience to be like ‘coming to my house for dinner. which is always a bit madcap!'. Tonight‘s theme, ‘Black Majik'. will be followed by more concepts to challenge traditional dining habits

under wraps for the time being. ‘The theme element will eventually disappear,’ he says ‘and it‘ll turn into a night where you show up and anything could happen.‘ At £25 it‘s perhaps a touch expensive for the casual dining Clubber. but curiosity seems to have filled the place tonight. The meal itself consists of a beautifully presented array of Eastern dishes, a starter of Sushi. followed by Chinese style marinated strips of beef (or aubergine and fennel if you're of the vegetarian persuasion) and the piece-de-resistance of a tongue roasting Thai curry. The best is saved for last, however. in the form of the most delectable lime cheesecake with watermelon, banana fritter and champagne coulis that leaves me feeling much like the proverbial cat that got the cream. The musical accompaniment of DJ Frederick Pairre stays just the right side of intrusion, although when the strains of ‘Papua New Guinea’ by the Future Sound of London start up, the urge to give it some on the dancefloor has to be quickly suppressed by another mouthful of that cheesecake. The competition for Dinner on the Decks is non-existent in Glasgow and if the idea of good food, good music and good fun with a touch of theatricality takes your fancy. there can be no more genial a host than Craig Wilde.
