COMIC PPQFlLE
DES CLARKE
When Al Murray was awarded the Perrier in 1999 it was seen as the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award, recognising his long-standing contribution to the industry. Des Clarke hasn't had to wait quite so long for his talents to be acknowledged. The young Glaswegian reached the final of So You Think You’re Funny last year at the tender age of nineteen, having
never been paid for a gig, and was narrowly beaten by a more experienced Australian comic Drew Rokos. But bitterness is the last thing on Clarke’s mind: ‘A lot of people said 1 should have won that night, but you can't worry about that. The judges had a difficult choice to make and I’m glad I made that choice difficult. I’m not ashamed in any way of coming second.‘
lf last year’s festival held fond memories, August this year could be all the more special. Adding the BBC New Comedy Award Final and the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award Final to his blossoming biog, Clarke is also looking forward to a four-week run at the Gilded Balloon’s Midnight Show: ‘It should be a great experience; I've never “done” the festival before in the sense of doing a show every night. I suppose it's something that every comedian has to do and by the end of it, I hope to know my material inside out.’
So what of his material? His improvisational skills have been highly-lauded, but is this confirmation that pro-written material does exist in his stammering, word-play-laden set? ‘I give the impression that I don’t know what I‘m doing but that’s part of the trick. It’s like American wrestling - it looks real, but a lot of times you find out it’s not as real as you think it is. But they still hit each other with chairs and that’s what my act’s all about.’ Surely a true Scottish comedy genius in waiting. (Maureen Ellis)
