Anthony Bourdain (far left) carves out a cracking story
In Britain the best we can produce in the way of celebrity chefs are the matronly Delia, the spikily-coiffed Gary Rhodes or variety-hall style showman Ainsley Harriot. Meanwhile, on the gritty streets of New York city, Anthony Bourdain cuts a slightly different figure. The missing link between guns and gateaux, mobsters and marinades, Bourdain has shot into the spotlight with his acclaimed novels Bone In The Throat and Gone Bamboo and his real-life expose Kitchen Confidential.
Having worked his way up from dishwasher at a series of seedy joints to executive chef at New York bistro, Les Halles, Bourdain has seen a lot. The combination of working in a professional kitchen and experiencing first- hand the antics of local mobsters gives Bourdain’s fiction writing an authentic edge. And in the tradition of Elmore Leonard, Bourdain’s ‘Paulies’ and ‘Donnies’ get spurred along by fast-crackin’ dialogue, and a huge helping of black comedy. His talent for writing is obvious, but it seems Bourdain has no plans to give up his carving knives for good. His love of food seems to surpass his love of mob-culture and for the moment he manages to fit in the book tours around his culinary obligations.
With a new novel due out in the spring of next year, Bobby Gold, Bourdain isn’t leaving anything on the back burner. He’s visiting Scotland to read from his work and answer questions from what could be a bizarrer mixed crowd of culinary fanatics and gangster wannabes. (Louisa Pearson)
