MELTING POT ,l. The Riverside Club, Glasgow, Sat 19 May. it: The Riverside Club’s continuing ,3. transformation from well- established ceilidh hall to venue of choice for Glasgow's more marginal, icy. underground nightclubs continues i; apace. The latest addition to the i; roster is Melting Pot, a club that l5 harks back to the golden days of ; disco without descending into full- "‘
on novelty retro territory. ‘The sound we’re going for is
predominantly disco,’ says promoter Mark Mackechnie. ‘Partly because the DJs have been playing a lot of disco re-edits recently, and it seemed like a natural progression from that, and because, having been to disco nights in New York and London, we felt we could bring a bit of that
atmosphere to Glasgow.’
After a successful one-off event, featuring veteran disco jock and dance music chronicler Bill Brewster, the Melting Pot crew saw a gap in the market. ‘The first night went really well,’ Mackechnie says, ‘and that came about initially because we wanted to do a night at the Riverside and there was only one night available, but thanks to some fortuitous timing, there‘s now a space for us to do Melting Pot there regularly.‘
For the first of its regular slots, Melting Pot has chosen to showcase Strut Records, represented by the label’s touring DJ Simon Haggis. Strut is perhaps best known for compiling rare and classic disco, funk and atro- beat tracks, as on Joey Negro’s sublime Disco Not Disco (pictured) and the essential Larry Levan Live at The Paradise Garage, effectiver archiving on vinyl the same era Melting Pot seeks to revive and take inspiration from.
‘The name Melting Pot is taken from a 70s fanzine,’ Mackechnie explains. ‘It took in disco, but also covered people like Fela Kuti, or records that fed into house music and that’s the kind of thing we’re going for. Obviously we’re never going to recreate that scene exactly because it was very much linked to a particular time and place. All we’re doing is reflecting that time and bringing it to a new audience and Strut Records fit that perfectly, because they’re largely responsible for the resurgence of interest in this
