Gentinili Corelli’s Robola 1999 (Greece. $36.49) You've read the book. you've seen the film, now drink the wine. No seriously, Captain Core/li's Mandolin was shot on the island of Cephalonia, home to the Gentilini winery. The Robola grape is indigenous to the island and this is the best example of it, so the author granted permission to use the name for the wine. The wine itself is QUIIO fresh with a slightly off-dry grapey ster — perfect for those who find some Greek whites too austere and don't like Retsma.

Campbell’s Silverburn ‘Wine Quartet’ 1999 (Australia. 534.99. Seven for six equivalent price £4.28) This is a very soft. easy going blend of four grape varieties (strangely absent from the label, but probably Riesling led). There certainly is a soft structure here. with good fruit character, making it ridiculously easy to drink. The bottle didn't last very long. which is further proof and would be perfect ice cold on a hot summer night.
Ptomaine Des Blageurs Syrah 1997 (France. 57190) This is from the ever eccentric Randall Grahm — the Californian who painted one of his ‘.‘J|fl(}l\,"5% water tanks to resemble a UFO. Syrah from the south of France can be touch and go but this is (lllllt' spectacular. tasting more like a vastly more expensive Cro/es Hermitage from the northern Rhone. lhere are layers of smoke, licorice. coffee and vibrant redcurrant. Quite a lot going on really for such a modestly priced write.

Deakin Estate Shiraz/Cabernet 2000 (Australia. $4.99. Seven for six eotiivalent price $34.28) A cousrn Wine from this estate was awarded nigh-on full marks from the world's foremost wine critic a couple of years ago. This is a slightly cut down version, wrth big bramny fruit character, backed up WllIl a substantial tannic backbone. A real food wine. but can easily be drunk on its own. (Gordon Haggarty)
