BPTHDA‘K BASH THE SUNDAY SOCIAL The Arches, Glasgow. Sun 6 May.

It’s not often that a club can claim to be unique, but

there’s nowhere else in Glasgow like the monthly mini- festival that is The Sunday Social. As you’d expect, The Arches’ all-dayer is celebrating its first birthday with a

typically diverse line-up of live music and visual treats.

‘I think I’ve achieved what I set out to,’ says programmer Tamsin Austin. ‘I’m a huge festival fan and, because they don’t run all year, I wanted to create something with that atmosphere and the sense that you don’t quite know what you’re going to see. Last time we had Alan Bryden, who’s the resident DJ, conducting a string quartet, playing some pieces he’d written and then playing their usual chamber music. But we can put people like Richard Devine on, who’s much harder and more experimental and people will listen.

‘1 think the people coming have realised that, even if they don’t like one act, they’ll probably like the next. We have a crowd of about 350 regulars who are really chilled and receptive to what we’re trying to do, so it’s perfect for putting on music that is difficult to place

elsewhere.’

Alongside the commitment to esoteric live music, ranging from up-and-coming Scottish electronica to Voigt Kampf to the grand old men of world jazz, Azymuth, the Social also has a strong commitment to visual stimulation. And it’s something Austin wants to develop by involving more local video artists alongside

the screenings and live VJing.

The Sunday Social’s video programme is set to expand with CineFeel joining resident VJ Tapehead for a three-month stint. The audio-visual collective,

founded in 1995, will be showing short films with a

music bias and promo videos from their archive, focusing on different directors and artists each month. The next year of Sunday Social events look set to repeat the formula of the past twelve months, drawing a crowd willing to listen to acts they may not know, and certainly won’t hear elsewhere, while expanding the

visual side of the equation. (Jack Mottram)
