68 THE LIST .g’t‘ Apu'.‘ Man

George Square Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 28 Apr.

Pre-election fever has got the better of us at The List. We‘ve been speculating on our dream cabinet. The prime minister would be Billy Bragg and his deputy Mark Thomas. Overseas minister would be Jeremy Hardy and we‘d hand the economy to Mark Steele. Where then would that leave Robert Newman? ‘I like the sound of this,‘ says the former Mary Whitehouse Experience star. ‘l’d be the former showgirl speaker. I'd be like the compere. I’d do the punch-line competition at half time. That’d boost the ratings.‘

My question is not entirely frivolous. If you want to get radical commentary, forget the opposition

parties, watch The Mark Thomas Product or catch Newman’s excellent Edinburgh Fringe show, Resistance Is Fertile, being brought back to the

capital by The Stand.

But if the heyday of political stand-up was in the Elton-era 80$, isn’t Newman a man out of time? ‘In the late 805 they concentrated on the Westminster soap opera, whereas now it’s looking at the structure of the power,’ he says. ‘These political personalities aren’t very important in themselves, because the same thing is happening in every country. Spitting Image flattered their ego; none of the important decisions are in

the public arena any more.’

Could it be that comedy is inevitably reactionary? ‘There is something reactionary in some comedy,’ he says. ‘Even some political comedy is a sit- down protest against the imagination: “Daft as a brush? Brushes aren’t daft”. But when it’s good it’s the opposite. To be in a room full of people feeling the same way is very important. The laughter of recognition is a moment of an audience being a collective.’ (Mark Fisher)
