STUART DAVID The Peacock Manifesto V- s‘iioooo

Dreams. as boss-eyed soul diva. Gabrielle, once claimed, can come true. It's a credo wholeheartedly embraced by taciturn Glasgow visionary, Peacock Johnson, the star of Stuart David‘s follow-up to his marvellous debut. Nalda Said. With a possibly genius, probably insane plan to transform Glen Campbell‘s ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ into a world- wide techno smash, Peacock finds himself transported to the less than mythic plains of contemporary America with approximately zero idea of how to actualise his fantasies.

Dispensing with the necessarily contrived prose of his debut, David here reinforces his talent for simple yet unpredictable storytelling, contriving a genuinely touching and original treatise on the disparity betwixt reality and myth. Accompanied by his Hollywood-besotted wife and the unpredictable Evil Bob, Peacock’s journey takes in recalcitrant samplers, Glen Campbell look-a- likes, abysmal DJ sets and mini-bar warfare, all the while heaving with the aura of tragic inevitability that may well be becoming David‘s trademark.

Unflashily written, with a fluent knack for dialogue, David makes us care about his characters without ever straining for pathos. The desires of Peacock et al are so innocently hungered for, it’s impossible to remain untouched by their quest, so by the time our hero actually does get to Phoenix, we share in his almost heart-breaking disappointment in its resoundineg unromantic reality.

Hi-jacking the wandering narratives and symbolic-quest motifs of the road movie genre. Stuart David skilfully dodges cliche at every turn, creating a slight yet involving tale of curious, quiet profundity. (Paul Whitelaw)
