RADIO MAGNETIC

Son Of Psy Phi at Substitute Venue. Glasgow, Fri 16 Mar.

With Radio 1 churning out dross by the hour and commercial radio stuck in a five-song playlist rut, there’s precious little on the airwaves for fans of, loosely speaking, underground music. The internet isn’t much better, either, with niche stations invariably providing personality-free half-hour mixes. New venture Radio

Magnetic is set to change all that, combining quality programming with a broad outlook and the feel of a terrestrial station.

‘Often with internet radio, stations tend to move away from the conventional radio model,’ says co-founder Tom Lousada. ‘Whether it’s in terms of being a lot more on demand for the listener or with the kind of music they offer. We want to maintain that conventional radio model - we’ll have a playlist during the day, we’ll have presenters - and enable people to have the option to listen to one particular show when they want as well. It’s about pushing forward music that we think is accessible but that people

can’t hear because it doesn’t played.’

The music policy of Radio Magnetic should suit Glasgow and Edinburgh clubbers down to the ground, thanks to the involvement of the likes of Soma records, the Sub Club and Manga.

‘People are involved in various different capacities,’ Lousada says. ‘Soma and Fenetik, say, are definitely going to have their own shows, either showcasing different DJs associated with the labels or doing a straightforward mix under their brands. The Sub Club are involved in the sense that they’re very supportive when it comes to doing live recordings

from the club.’

Although the station doesn’t want to corner itself into one particular genre of music, the policy is going to be dance orientated. ‘During the daytime we will try and make it a bit more accessible, but bring in independent music that wouldn’t get played on the terrestrial radio stations,’ he says. ‘The evening will be a lot more specialist, but we don’t want to exclude anything, as long as it’s good, we want to play it.’
