IRISH WHISKEY
With St Patrick's Night looming. a great many of us Will be grabbing our Irish mates and heading off to the nearest theme bar for a spot of Red Rover. Well. maybe. But it's that time of year again to get a bit of Irish whiskey in. Usually considered the poor COtlSlll to 'Scotch', Irish styles are often overlooked.
They are different. though. They do tend to be lighter and a tad fruitier than our own. The main difference is that the spirit is distilled three times. rather than tvwce over here. This leads to a lighter. purer ethanol, which if anything makes it even eaSier to drink (but has no positive effect on your head in the morning). Many people who profess not to like whisky find that they do like the Irish style.

Jameson's (521249—321399. Widely available) Perhaps the most famous of them all. this is a blended whiskey typical of the style. Very light in colour. and very light aromas on the nose. Because of the reduced pungency of the alcohol. more tropical fruit aromas come through. in this case bananas (believe it or not). It may be similarly light on the palate. but it's amazingly integrated. with a finishing sweetness. Dangerously easy to drink. Tyrconnell Single Malt (£19.99.

With a great malty richness. but With a peachy. honey character and even a touch of pineapple. The palate is medium bodied with sweetness and spiciness playing off against each other. There's a wealth of flavours here. and again the triple fermentation helps the tastes show through. by not haVing the classic whiskey alcoholic sting.

Oddbins) One of the drawbacks of triple distilled whiskeys is that they are sometimes not aged for as long as their counterparts. This is an exception to that rule; more full-bodied than most. and the oak aging adds sufficient complexity. There's a real oiliness to the body and a touch of spice. A real lrish classic.
