lilP'iHlJ/a/ BASH THE PROJECT The Bongo Club, Sat 10 Mar.

Eclecticism is a nice concept. But Out Of The Blue is an organisation that walks the walk as well as talking the talk. It’s best known for the Bongo Club, the venue that plays host to hip hop, reggae, electronica and jazz on a regular basis and frequently in the course of the same night. The organisation also hosts exhibitions and

community groups in the same space and this fortnight, it celebrates its seventh birthday and its last in the current premises.

The birthday date coincides with the third monthly Project and the Out Of The Blue staffers are expected to be down in force, alongside information boards on the history of the organisation. It all seems rather fitting because the Project is a night with an ever-changing musical mandate. Residents AI Bee and Adam Bray (pictured) will be playing an assortment of techno, breaks, house and dub in the main room.

Bray, who has played at Edinburgh’s Headspin and Home in London, isn’t bothered by the variety. ‘It suits me down to the ground,’ he says, ‘because I play all sorts of separate styles. The last Project I started with some techno before going into drum & bass stuff. It was fantastic, the crowd were really up for it and went with everything.’

This month those beats are going to be pounding out of the Messenger sound system, borrowed from the dub reggae night for the special occasion. And if that isn’t enough for anyone to be getting it on with, the back room features local black music enthusiast Eh?Wun!, who’ll be spinning a solid R&B and hip hop selection. ‘He’s not been playing much recently,’ says promoter Eddie Brock. ‘I-le's converted to Islam and has been working with some of his bands, but I phoned him up and asked him to play and he was like “Definitely, man”.’

It seems enthusiasm is contagious. (James Smart)
