66 THE LIST 1—15 Mar 2001
NEW NIGHT AURALL Mas, Glasgow, Sun 4 Mar.
Sunday night is fast becoming, if not the new Saturday, the evening of choice for the dedicated hedonist. To go out at the tail end of the weekend is a considered gesture of contempt to the weekday grind and, frankly, only the truly keen can manage three nights of liver-damage and late-nights in a row. For those who choose to burn the candle at both ends while applying a blowtorch to the middle,
Aurall guest Princess Julia
the choice of Sunday clubs now includes Aurall.
In a time of jaded promoters squeezing the kids for cash, the club also stands out thanks to its genesis from a group of like-minded clubbers who’ve dubbed themselves, with little room for modesty, the Millennium Clubstars. ‘We’re clubbers who’ve always gone to Taste and Fruitfly, and mixed nights in general like Vague down in Leeds,’ Craig Wilde, a founding member of the organisation, explains. ‘We used to get in touch over the internet and plan after-parties, and that was all good fun. We’d all have code-names and have a laugh with it, and now there’s about 200 of us, so
we almost have a ready-made crowd.’
He continues: ‘The first proper night we did was when we took over Slave to do ROMAN©SIave a year ago. It was just an amazing night and I thought, “Wait a minute, I can do this!” We went for a Sunday night because it seemed like we could offer something different; at the moment you’ve really got a choice of Optimo, where not everyone’s going to get the style of music they play, or you’ve got Bennet’s and the Polo Lounge, and the days of gay clubs playing the best music are long gone. I’m not into running a gay club so, to use the vernacular, we’re after the gay ned and the straight ned, and the two taster nights worked out well with a roughly 50/50 mix.’
