When a conductor turns their back on you to face the orchestra, there are a few things you expect to see; flailing arms, a nodding head, maybe even the odd body swoop - but a shakin’ ass ain’t one of them. And yet that’s exactly what Marin Alsop presented to us at the premier of Michael Torke’s new percussion concerto, Rapture. And frankly, who can blame her. When young Edinburgh-born musician Colin Currie steps up to the bongos, there aren’t many derrieres that can remain still. Moving effortlesst between drums, tom- toms, wooden blocks, a vast xylophone and what he terms a metallic ‘industrial rig’, the hugely talented 25-year-old operates with the hot-footed fervour of a club DJ. Dressed in his shiny green shirt and trainers, Currie helped prove there’s more to the RSNO than black ties and court shoes.
As for the piece itself, nothing worth having comes easy, and Torke makes you work for your enjoyment. At times abrasive, disjointed and even discordant, Rapture has few simple melodies to grasp on to. And when they do arrive, they’re locked in a battle for supremacy with the percussive cacophony. But then that’s half the fun for us, and doubtless a huge
challenge for Torke who had to
collaborate closely with Currie
whilst learning to write for percussion. Although it would appear he’s looked far and wide for

inspiration, injecting an afro-Caribbean feel into the first movement, an oriental flavour into the second and finally looking to his native city of New York for the third.

After such a challenging, yet rewarding piece, it was nice to be offered something on a plate in the second half. Mahler’s Symhony No 4 in
G major is a huge layer cake of a piece,
which when sliced open reveals a much
darker middle than promised by its sugar-
coated opener. Once again Alsop pulls this expansive piece along with aplomb, exploiting perfectly the many surprises Mahler peppers throughout his most accessible, and at times sublime, symphony. (Kelly Apter)
