The best gigs this fortnight

ROCK/POP Mark Eitzel This addition to the gig schedule permits only a perfunctory fawning but this man is a near god. The former frontman of American Music Club, Eitzel can hold a room spellbound With only his goitar and soaring v0ice like few others can manage. His inactiVity on the recording front means this may be an evening of live tryouts for new numbers, so miss at your peril, 73th Note Club, Glasgow, Tue 27 Feb Evan Dando The Lemonheads are no more and big chief Dando is striking out on his own (despite the fact it was his band anyway). A pared-down acoustic set showcasing his heartfelt tunes and honeyed vocal With songs new and old guaranteed. See preVieW. Wi‘lkie House, Edinburgh, Sat 77 Feb; King Tut’s, Glasgow, Sun 78 Feb.

Arab Strap A bit heavy on the old morose fellas Singing With guitars I know, but it's a prime week for it. Maybe Arab Strap should get their own permanent slot in here for the number of appearances they’ve made, but the strength of their newest offering, the ingenious The Red Thread, carves out new territory for the duo, and re-affirms them as a band to welcome With open arms. Arches, Glasgow, Wed 28 Feb.

HIP HOP

Ugly Duckling Be sure this is no kids fairy tale, no sir, this Ugly Duckling (above) parade good Vibe, quirky Brit party hip hop. Yet another group of great unsung heroes, the UK proves it can do hip hop With style and class. Arches, Glasgow, Tue 20 Feb

JAZZ

Scottish National Jazz Orchestra The SNJO hook up With Maria Schneider, Who as one of America’s finest Jazz Orchestra composers is the natural heir to Gil Evans’ throne. Her collaboration should prove to be nothing short of spectaCUlar. See preVieW. Queens Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 76 Feb.

CLASSICAL

Royal Scottish National Orchestra Marin Alsop a rarity in classical mUSlC being a female conductor leads the RSNO in premiering Michael Torke’s Percussion Concerto, the lead player on which Will be local hero Colin Currie. See Famespotting page 7?. Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Thu 22 Feb; Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 23 Feb.
