TECHNO RESIDENCY Gain Alaska, Glasgox'x, Sat 10 Feb.
Amidst the hallowed walls of the infamous Soma corporation, Percy X takes up the mantle of being the
Soma's electronic expert Percy X
techno residency of the same name has won converts all over Scotland and this reputation is set to be
mysterious electronic expert of that notorious bass- fuelled bitch known only as techno. But as the master of the notoriously hard bag explains, subtlety is not out of the question. 'I play techno, but it’s not really that hard. You expect it to be banging but I can just as easily throw in a bit of disco. It gets people going more. It's just a class night for Glasgow. I wouldn't even say it's a techno night, just good DJs doing what they should.’
The night in question is Gain at Alaska. Last year the Slam boys revitalised Alaska with operation upgrade and now new heights have been found with a string of worldly-wise DJs guaranteeing sell-out gigs on a regular basis. Adding to the sparkle is Percy’s own night, named after his groundbreaking album project released on Soma last Autumn. An impressive collection of electronic grooves, Gain reflects Percy’s distinctive
boosted by the guest appearance of one of Percy's own heroes, James Ruskin.
Rebuilding the sound of London's techno since 1994 (think Trade, think Heaven), James Ruskin's presence and demand has gathered respect throughout the world. His weighty back-catalogue of studio and remix work, especially that on Blueprint Records, is consistently well received by his contemporaries. ‘He plays a lot like Jeff Mills, loads of records fast,’ says Percy. ’He’s on one of the best techno outfits in Britain [Blueprint] and it’s guys like him that we’re trying to get more of at Gain. The month after James plays we’ve got Andy Weatherall. That is Gain's main aim, to get the good DJs. We’ve got the club sorted out and the crowds are getting better every month. You know the Pressure nights? Well, think about it like a mini-Pressure
DJing style, namely one that fuses funky techno, syncopated rhythms and driving, dirty bass to maximum effect. After only a few months, the tuneful
