The Claim (15) iitt (Michael Winterbottom. UK. 200]) Peter Mullan. Milla Jovovich. Nastassja Kinski. Sarah I’olley. 120 mins. The prolific Michael Winterbottom (lie/come To .Surujm'o. ll'onderlum!) makes his most ambitious directorial venture to date with a post-(iold Rush drama. loosely inspired by Thomas Hardy's The Mayor 0] Custerhridge. The principal setting is the mining community of Kingdom Come. a remote output effectively owned and run by Irish immigrant Dillon (Mullan). who harbours the guilticst of secrets concerning his wife Iilena (Nastassja Kinski) and daughter Ilope (Polley). Anchored by Mullan's typically powerful central performance. this relentlessly sombre tale stands proudly in the tradition of revisionist Westerns like Robert Altman's
f .‘lchabexlnd Mrs Miller. See preview and

The Closed Doors (al Abwab al Moghlaka) (18)(Atcflletata. Iigypt/l’rance. 1998) 118 mins. Part of (‘inemamed. see preview. I-'ilmhouse. [Edinburgh
The Colour Of Paradise (PG) **** (Majid Majidi. Iran. 2000) Mohscn Ramezani. llosein Mahjoob. Salameh I’eyzi. 88 mins. The widowed father of blind young Mohammad picks him up from school for the summer break. and takes him back to their beautiful mountainous village. But no sooner are they home and the father wants to off-load the boy onto a blind carpenter. The father reckons having a blind son will ruin his own chances of marrying into an upmarket Islamic family. The story really is secondary — it‘s as an essay on the sounds and sights of nature that Majidi's film hits home. Adam Smith Theatre. Kirkcaldy. Comfort And Joy (PG) kirk (Bill I-‘orsyth. UK. 1984) Bill Paterson. Iileanor David. Patrick Malahide. Rikki Fulton. 106 mins. A quirky Scottish comedy. along the lines of I-‘orsyth's earlier (iregory".s‘ (Iirl. which doesn‘t quite hit the mark in the same endearing way. Paterson is in fine form, though. as a disc jockey with more personal problems than he can handle who manages to get caught up in an underworld dispute over the territorial rights of ice cream vans. Cousin Bette ( 15 *** (Des McAnuff. US. 1998) Jessica Lange. [Elisabeth Shue. Kelly Macdonald. 108 mins. Cousin Belle brings a wicked whiff of spirit to the world
of period drama. Based on a Balzac novel.
the story centres on middle-aged spinster Bette. whose status as poor relation is compounded when her more favoured cousin dies. Widower Ilector llulot offers her the position of housekeeper but. when she is emotionally betrayed by Ilulot's daughter Ilortense. Bette constructs a plan of revenge. The witty script picks away at the hypocrisies of the aristocracy while the pacy direction drives us effortlessly towards the inevitable and satisfying conclusion. ()deon. Kilmarnock.
Coyote Ugly (12) it (David McNally. US. 2000) Maria Bello. Piper Perabo, John Goodman. 101 mins. Presumably the high concept pitch for this latest slice of wish fulfilment was ‘I-‘lus/Idmu‘e meets Cocktail '. The title refers to a New York drinking spot. where the drop-dead gorgeous (female) bartenders dance suggestively on the bar and pour shots down the customers‘ throats. The latest recruit to this ‘lively‘ environment is young Violet (Perabo). a girl from New Jersey who dreams of making it in the Big Apple as a singer-songwriter. Ignore the claims that this is a tale of female empowerment: the film is a tease. titillating its male viewers with its images of midriff- baring babes in halter tops and tight leather trousers. before retreating behind its l2 certificate. (.‘ameo. Edinburgh.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (I2) *‘k‘kit (Ang lee. China/US. 2000) Michelle Yeoh. (‘how Yun-I-‘at. Zhang '/.Iyi. (‘hang ('hen. 120 mins. Jane Austen meets Bruce Lee in Ang ‘SenwAIuISensibility" Lee's astonishing martial arts period drama. In a fictionalised version of early l‘)th
century China. a world of heroic warriors
and deep philosophical values. Lee
seamlessly interweaves the stories of two
sets of lovers. and a revenge tale with a
feminist twist. The fight scenes are groundbreaking. as choreographed by expert
Yuen Wo Ping. At once breathtaking and
beautiful. Crouching Tiger's also a cinematic landmark: its fusion of the best
elements from East and West cinema has created something wholly new. Selected release.
Daughter Of A Good Family (Bent Familia) (12) (Nouri Bouzid. Tunisia. 1997) 1].? mins. Part of Cinemamed. see preview. Filmhouse. Iidinburgh.
Day Of The Fight (U) (Stanley Kubrick. US. 1951) 10mins. The second of Kubrick's documentary shorts. this was based on a pictorial he did for Look magazine in 1949 on boxer Walter (.‘artier. The film divides into three parts (much like his later I’ulI .llerulJru‘ke!) and tells of the pre-tight build- up for the perspectives of a fan. boxing historian and the prizelighter himself. A brief but insightful work. Cameo. Iidinburgh.
Dead Babies ( lb‘) iii (William Marsh III. UK. 2000) Paul Bettany. Andy Nyman. Katy (.‘armichael. 100 mins. Marsh Ill updates Martin Amis‘ tale of sex. drugs and more drugs set over a weekend at the Appleseed Rectory from the 70s to the present day. but his adaptation is only partly successful. The tranquillity enjoyede Appleseed's inhabitants. ranging from the tall blond elegant Ilon. Quentin Villiers (Bettany) to the very tiny. very fat court dwarf Keith (Nyman). is rocked by the arrival of a group ofAmericans. headed by Marvell Buzzhardt (played by Marsh Ill) carrying more drugs than an episode of Miami Vice. Marsh III works hard to retain the essence of the novel. but his Iidelity undermines the film with some pointless narration and too many characters to develop. Grosvenor. Glasgow.
Dinosaur (PU) tit (lirie Leighton. Ralph Zondag. US. 2000) Voices of: I).B. Sweeney. Julianna Margulies. Joan Plowright. 82 mins. This latest computer animated offering from Disney follows the journey ofAladar the lguanadon as he flees across the meteor-ravished wasteland of prehistoric Iiarth alone after being separated from his family. Initially. the excitement is contagious; the (‘GI scenes are so realistic it's not that hard to believe what you are watching could be real. Then tragedy strikes; the lemurs talk. And talk. Yet as the predictable and. ultimately. boring storyline of Dinosaur unfolds. that winning Disney formula is guaranteed to keep any dinosaur crazy four-year-old pinned to his or her seat without scaring them too much. (ieneral release.
