Valentine Fizz
It might be cliched, but Valentine's Day booze has got to be rose champagne. Whatever they say, it’s more romantic than a bottle of Miller Genuune Draft with a bit of red food colouring in it.
However, they are often
misunderstood and a55umed to be sweet. Not so, in fact many rose’ sparklers are marginally drier than their white counterparts. Anorak point here: pink champagnes are about the only wines in the world that are legally allowed to be blended from red and white wines.
However, they need not always be
3 that expensive, and there are plenty of
cheapish roses about, not all from the Champagne region.
Montana Lindauer Rose (New
Zealand, £7.99) A very soft, fruity style; not by any means sweet, but with a
' great rounded fruitiness. There are
l hints of strawberry and a fresh
yeastiness lingering in the background.
A great, almost budget-priced fizz,
which means you can buy two.
FOOD & DRINK
Mumm Cuveé Napa Rosé (California, £10.99) The champagne giant, Mumm, launched this venture in the Napa valley in the 80s Technically identical to a champagne, but not one, this is more serious stuff. Only lightly pink, and a bit drier, this has soft notes of cherry and strawberry, and with a fine persistent mousse.
Billecart Salmon Rose (Champagne, £29.99) This is a real benchmark and they don’t get much better than this. It has an extremely fine sparkle to it and a very subtle colour; very lightly pinky peach. The palate is also very subtle, but with layers of complexity. There are
overtones again of strawberries, but there's also a wonderful toastiness
underlying it. Best consumed in bed. I All wines are widely available. Prices are approximate.
