Age 37 Occupation Director, Khublai Khans On Khublai Khan: ’lt's a unique dining experience; the fact that you’re collecting all the ingredients to make up your own dishes of food, there are unlimited combinations, you’re watching it being cooked in front of you, and you can go up to the barbecue as many times as you like. Glasgwegians have taken to it.’ On competition 'The more venues there are in the Merchant City, the better it is for all of us. It means more people will make the effort to come down and the Merchant City will get an even better reputation.’ Celebrity Patron Sir Richard Branson. Trivia tit-bit The Mongolian barbecue concept comes from Ghengis Khan and Khublai Khan who invaded Eastern Europe in the 13th century and would use their up-turned shields to create a stir-fry using meat and veg, adding their own herbs, spices and sauces. l Khublai Khans, 26 Candleriggs, 0747 400 8090

Occupation Chargehand, Rab Ha’s
On Rab Ha’s 'lt's been here for a while whereas most of the other bars in the Merchant City are
' relatively new, so I don't know if it fits in with the
trendiness of the Merchant City. It is popular with
‘ so many age groups; it’s a tiny little pub and it’s
not very modern, but if you come in here for the first time then you pick up on the good atmosphere and that’s why it’s so popular.‘
On the Merchant City ’It’s seen as a trendy bit of the city because of the Italian Centre and all the little shops. It’s still cut off from the city centre which is just around the corner. It’s quite like the West End so I don’t think it’s that different.’ Celebrity patrons Anna Ryder Richardson of Changing Rooms fame is stepping out with the owner.
Trivia tit-bit The bar is named after Rab Ha, a Glasgow glutton who used to pretend he was a food critic to get free meals. ‘I don’t know if that story is true; that’s what taxi drivers tell me.’
