DEEP FUNK MASTER
Keb Darge Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh, Fri 26 Jan.
Keb who? Deep what? Don’t be ashamed if you haven't heard of one of Scotland's unsung musical pioneers. He’s strayed far from home on occasion but never forgotten his roots. Hence this visit. The EIgin-born DJ has almost single-handedly created a musical scene, not by intention but by circumstantial accident. 'I got divorced from my Japanese wife and I had to sell my Northern,’ says Darge, referring to his once- treasured Northern Soul singles
collection. 'I was left with this pile of junk that I had bought in the States during the 70s. I started to listen to them and discovered a lot of rare funk
among these records.’
Swayed by the love of another Japanese lady, Darge left his new base in London in 1989 and made a trip to Tokyo that would prove to be an eye- opener for the now 43-year-old soul boy. ’There was a rare groove scene out there,’ says Darge, ‘but nobody had really got right into it. Norman Jay and Roy The Roach were playing records that I had sold them around that time, but they wouldn't pay more than £8 for a record. 50 I started playing all these really rare records I had lying around the house, the ones Norman
and Roy wouldn't pay money for.’
Darge then set about dropping his deeper and darker sound at hip clubs such as the Brain and the Mud Club on his return to London, unleashing forgotten modern soul records such as Family Of Eve’s 'I Want To Be Loved By You' (a record that recently sold at auction for £700) on a whole new
audience.
Throughout the 905 Darge has built up the scene through residencies at Madame Jo Jo's in Soho and his popular deep funk compilations for BBE Records. So great is his influence that even Kenny ‘Dope' Gonzalez has become a disciple, visiting Darge when he DJs in London to buy some of his deep funk stuff. Meanwhile, his appearance in Edinburgh this month will confirm that deep funk is the new wave of soul, putting the penchant for collecting back into DJing and the rare back into rare groove.
