Protecting his v ideo and interactiye computer work in the shop window after dark. the shape and content of the visuals will be affected by the movement of passers by.

The Scottish Colourists 1900-1930 ('ntil Sun 28 Jan. £3.50 (£3). .A major survey of the work of('adell. Fergusson. Htmter and Peploe. collectively known as the Scottish Colourists. The exhibition. curated by Philip Long. was lirst shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. attracting 80,000 visitors. The most admired of Scottish artists. but often overlooked by art historians. all four were greatly influenced by France. and exposure to post- lmpressionism and the early Fatty e works of Matisse not otin shaped their style bttt saturated their paintings with tremendous colottr. Gifford's series of works relating to Middlesborough Art Gallery and the surrounding town will be shown alongside landscape and abstract paintings created during a recent residency in the Dortlogne. Gifford previously showed a light installation at the gallery as part of their Northern Lights exhibition in 1997.

Sum Of Parts L'ntil Sat 13 Jan. The Fruitmarket Gallery bookshop presents an exhibition of artists‘ book works. multiples and editions by invited artists. The works on display encompass a broad range of media including paintings. books. pamphlets. CD-ROMs. video and audio work. featuring artists Beagles and Ramsey. Helen Douglas. Morning Star. Keith Thompson and many others. Northern Lights Peter Fink‘s long awaited light installation for the gallery was unveiled on Hogmanay. Inspired by the aurora borealis. this permanent feature comprises a ‘roof fm' triangle of light. light detailing on the east and west roof and a light pavement. and will no doubt brighten up this dark corner of Edinburgh's Market Street.

Alan Davie L'ntil Sun 14 Jan. Free. Born in Grangemouth in 1920 and a graduate of Edinburgh College of An. Alan Davie was one of the most highly regarded European artists of the post-war era. Celebrating his 80th birthday. this exhibition of oils. drawings and prints brings together works frotn 1939 to the present day.

Shift: New Works By Alison Watt L'ntil Sun 7 Jan. Greenoek-born artist Alison Watt is one of the leading painters to emerge from Scotland in the last decade. Showing a new series of paintings for the first time at the gallery. Watt. renowned for her diptych paintings of a female nude and

painted fabric. now turns her attention to the fabric.

Sigmar Polke: Music Of Unclear Origin Sat 13 Jan—Sun 18 Mar. A series of 40 gouaches by Sigmar Polke go on display. Emigrating to West Germany in 1953. he became one of the country‘s foremost painters. gaining notoriety in the 60s and 70s for his humorous works similar in style to the Pop Art being tnade in Britain and America. The Vau han Bequest 0f Turner Waterco ours t'ntil Wed 31 Jan. The annual airing of Turner's magnificent watercolours. bequeathed iii 1900 by the London art collector. Henry Vaughan. The display. which is only shown in the month of January when daylight is at its weakest. features early topographical wash drawings of the 1790s and watercolour sketches of Continental Europe carried out in the l830s and 40s.

The Great Turner (1775-1851): A Tribute L'ntil Sun 4 Mar. To complement the annual exhibition of the Turner Watercolours. and to mark the 150th anniversary of Turner's death. an exhibition of oil paintings. watercolours and prints drawn from the gallery's permanent collection.
