Cameras in clubs have never been a good idea. Disposable ones become just that, but often before they make it to the developers, and so as we take that great leap into 2001, modern technology has found a way of capturing our clubbing antics and also bringing us all closer together: It's called Spaced, it's a beautiful thing and Catherine Bromley is just walling up with emotion.

Pull yourself together woman, surely it's just a soup'ed-up photo booth? Sniff . . . sniff . . . no it’s much more than that. It’s a revolutionary new concept that allows clubbers the ability to negate the pesky side effects of too many pills so that they can actually remember who they were with that particular night and what kind of a state they were in.
Yeah. Like I said. Try again. Well, you know how 57% of the 13 million UK internet users are aged between 15 and 34 and that the young online population is expanding at a rate of 5,000 per day? It’s this very market that the designers of the Spaced pods are capitalising on, in addition of course to the innate desires among young people to have fun, try new things and waste money.
Your 'phacts’ are impressive but I’m still not grappling with the meat of this new-tangled contraption. All in good time. So let’s imagine you're in a club, you want to capture the blissed-out moment and all of a sudden you glimpse a sleek and sophisticated looking metal object in the corner of the room. After approaching with caution you discover that by mere slight of hand (ie touch technology) you can have your photo taken digitally, add a brief message and send an interactive postcard to three friends of your choice.
No Way? Yes, way. As I said it’s a revolutionary piece of kit and what's more Spaced users will also be able to register their own email address book of friends so that when they return to the venue, the 'pods' will 'recognise' them, thereby encouraging clubbers to use them again and again — the end result being a compilation album of a club junkie's favourite nights out.
What was that you said about wasting money? Yeah well, you don't expect something for nothing do you? It costs £2 a pop and what's that when you consider how priceless the memories are. in Spaced is available at La Belle Ange/e, Edinburgh.

A brand new rock night that showcases live bands from 8.30pm and then goes all spandex tunes from 11pm. Expect everything from stadium rock to nu-metal classics and a strict no pop policy in the main room.
