NEW NIGHT
Shock!
Eros/Elite, Edinburgh, weekly Fri. When you consider the potential tablord headline — ’Credible New ReSidency at CommerCial Central Shock’ — Grant Macmtosh's new weekly residency at Eros/Elite seems particularly well-named.
Sensationalism aSide, the leisure park club venue has come a long way in recent months, putting its reputation as a great place for a fight firmly in the past thanks to new management and improved door security. The enormous amount of money spent on the venue is finally starting to pay off and so successful has Eros/Elite become that in the recent BEDA awards the venue went on to win UK Discotheque Of The Year 2000 in a category that also included London’s Home and Bristol’s The Works. The final step to this revamp is the installation of semi- credible club nights and the new Friday weekly, Shockl, could just be the residency to ring the changes.
Previously famed for staging glam
Disco diva Kim Mazelle flanked by her current recording cohorts
house parties across Scotland, Grant Macintosh partly named the night after his reaction to seeing the venue’s interior for the first time. ’I was just gobsmacked when I saw it,’ he says, 'and I immediately recognised a superb canvas on which to paint an imaginative and multi-faceted mainstream club night'. Transporting all the winning elements from his former nights to the masswe space that boasts two rooms, six bars, a VIP room and a revolving dancefloor. Macintosh aims to create 'a naughty but nice fun-packed night with lots of wild, ever-changing events.’
Antics include podium dancing from the UK's hottest mixed dance troupe, Spank, towering black drag queen Tira Down working the crowd and the Look Makeover team making sure everyone’s turned out a treat. Lady M manages the dance anthems and retro hits and the inimitable Miss Whiplash will, according to Macintosh, be 'on hand to give the boys a wee reprimand if they get cheeky'. All this plus regular live PAS, a feature that this week welcomes none other than disco diva Kym Mazelle. A household name after the success of her chart hits ’Wait' and ‘Enough Is Enough', Miss Mazelle Will be performing her vocal from Sunray's soon-to-be-huge dance cover of the classic Doris Day song ’Perhaps’.
