; Everyone's excited about the West 3 Coast these days, and Halo & Hipp- ; E in particular: Jack Mottram sorts t the wheat from the chaff, grinds
the flour of funk and bakes his
: own house bread.
The West Coast, eh? Gang fighting,
I Wet Wet Wet, vinegar instead of
' sauce. I know what's what. Yes dear, of course you do. What we are talking about IS house music, not the rich
j diversity of Scottish culture, so the
; West Coast in question is across the pond. Namely the achineg hip San Francisco variant of downbeat, lushly somnambulant blending of funk, dubbiness and soul wrapped around the kind of hypnotic, deep and surging house that never gets too heavy, but belongs firmly on the dancefloor.
Oh, that. Anyone in particular? Didn't you read the introductory paragraph? Halo and Hipp-E are the topic for this fortnight's lesson. They are collectively known as the H-foundation, and,
; rather inconveniently given what I was ; just saying, hail from Chicago and
. Denver respectively.
So why are you blathering about the ; West Coast? Well, the pair have
I released tracks on San Diego's Siesta
j imprint, and back in '91 Hipp-E had a bit of a moment in famed San Francisco club Toon Town, which set the tone for his endeavours. Apropos
. of nothing, their real names are Eric
f and Brian.
How glamorous. The phacts have
i been a little weak so far, don't you think? Put those claws away, Miss
, Thing. You want phacts? Here goes: as ; well as releases on Siesta, the pair have 3 put out tracks on Chicago-based
3 imprint Moody Recordings, Low Pressings here in the UK, and have an album forthcoming on Glasgow’s own , Soma label, due for release next year.
They sound like producers, I thought they were Dls. And so they are. The pair have rocked crowds anywhere from Dose in Toronto to Tribe in San Francisco and erstwhile Club Kid hangout The Tunnel, NYC. And, of course, their incendiary past
appearances in Glasgow and
i Edinburgh have gone down a treat.
, Add to that a steady slew of mix tapes I and CDs, and their turntable

credentials seem to be in order. Well, now I know.
i ‘ Halo 81 Hipp-E play Relief at Alaska on Fri 7 Dec.

— All I know is that there's lots of fluffy bras and nice looking girls.
— At the moment, the music upstairs is a bit too chilled out for me, but it’s a bit funkier on the main dancefloor so I’ll be taking a wee trip down there in a couple of minutes.
— It’s funky, uplifting house - not too taxing. The DJs are not at all bad, alth0ugh I’ve yet to make up my mind who's the best.
— The best part of the evening so far? I would say the journey through here. We usually go to Edinburgh, but once a month we try to come through to the Arches for Colours or Inside Out. Our other option for tonight was a fancy dress party at Club Mercado in Edinburgh but as you can see, I’m not in fancy dress. It’s actually very nice at G1 though, I’m pleasantly surprised. It's a bit like a mini-Gatecrasher but without loads of diddies with day-glo hair.
