Antipodean trance overlord Anthony Pappa brings his melange of progressive doings to Edinburgh. Jack Mottram builds up, only to breakdown.
Who he? Come now, you must have heard of him. Anthony Is one of the big, ahem, cheeses of UK trance, resident at Renaissance in Nottingham. He also has a hectic touring schedule that takes in Uberclubs like Home and Cream.
But I thought trance was dead No such luck. 2000 was widely supposed to be the year of hard house, but the trance fraternity affected the tag 'progressive’ and continued to spread like wildfire. Blame the Americans if you want: Pappa is also due to start playing a bi-monthly set at TWllO in New York, also home to the venerable Sasha ’n’ Digweed.
Oh well, never mind, hit me with some more ‘phacts.’ Hey, less of the cheek you! That spelling is, like, way cool. Anyway, your man Pappa doesn’t just spin discs on the wheels of steel, he's a production boffin too. In these pseudonymous times, he even records under his own name from time to time, as well as being half of Freefall, and hiding behind monikers like Skydive and Shrug. He also has a massive number of remixes under his belt, natch.
I'll keep an eye out. What are his sets like? Well, we’re not talking the kind of ecstasy mechanics trance by numbers that lesser jocks depend on. Pappa’s trademark sound is based around fairly hard-edged progressive stuff peppered with a fair few i breakbeat-orientated tracks, the i trancier end of the tech house spectrum and the odd deep house cut. Of late, he’s co-opted the funky side of things, starting sets with lower ; tempo builders. *
Easy with the jargon, pal. Anything l else? Yeah. Pappa is a mainstay of the Underground New Breed mix series, and has crafted compilations for the Platipus imprint, well-respected home to the likes of Union Jack. And he’s the man at the decks on Choo Choo’s Volume 1 retrospective.
_ Anthony Pappa plays at Atom/"c Baby, La Belle Ange/e, Edinburgh, Sat 78 Nov and Progression, Wilkie House, Edinburgh, Fri" 24 Nov.
