Pressure has become such an integral part of the Glasgow nightclubbing landscape that it's hard to believe that it’s been just two years since the seminal weekly bash Slam morphed into its new incarnation.
We know that regulars and new clubgoers alike have embraced Pressure, but are residents Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle as upbeat? ’Oh Christ, yes!’ says Meikle from the Slam office. ’The decision to wind up the old club was not taken lightly, of course, but as far as we're concerned, Pressure is just as good, if not better. There have been so many great nights over the last two years: Cajmere always goes down well, so does Sneak and the night we had Marco Corolla stands out. Having more people through the door has given us a slightly bigger budget, and that breaks down nicely, so we can have a big name or more established act on and someone less well known as well.’
Pressure has also served as a springboard for McMillan and Meikle, who've set up a bi-monthly Soma showcase at the End. ’That’s going down really well, and it’s good to have a presence down there,’ Meikle says. ’And we never really have to modify our sets; we even played the usual heavy, funky set at Renaissance
recently, and people loved it.’
There's no sign that Pressure is set to run out of steam, either. The birthday night is the usual mix of superstars and the critically acclaimed, with Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim and Chicago hero DJ Sneak joined by Billy Nasty of Open To Torture fame aiding the Slam celebrations. As for future plans, Meikle isn’t giving too much away. ‘We've got a few ideas, but there’s nothing set in stone yet; we're always looking to change and freshen things up. As far as guests go there’s a lot of people we know from the circuit we want to come up, like Trevor Rockliffe and DJ Lottie, plus there’s that whole West Coast thing happening across the water with the likes of Halo & Hipp-E, or T-Bone from Canada.’
