CONTEMPORARY DANCE Scottish Dance Theatre
When Janet Smith took over the reins of Scottish Dance Theatre in 1997, she inherited a company with a barrel-load of potential, albeit rather tightly sealed. In three years, she has prised open the lid and unleashed a dance ensemble worthy of its national status. So assured is she of her dancers’ ability, that for SDT's autumn season Smith has handed over complete creative control to two guest choreographers.
San Franciscan Janice Garrett and Israeli-born Yael Flexer were chosen by Smith for their differing choreographic styles, and it was a choice well made. Both elicit superb performances from the dancers, while managing to tap into this youthful company's playful and energetic heart.
Garrett’s Plunge opens the night, an eclectic work which marries childlike frolicking and shadow play with boot camp marching and muscle man posing. Its creator’s American style is emblazoned all over the piece and composer Christopher Benstead's original score works in perfect harmony with the steps. But SDT's real technical prowess only becomes fully
apparent in Flexer’s Undone.
Again, humour is high on the agenda, with the dancers grinning out to the audience as the action stops and starts. Exploring bodily contact and gravity, the dance takes place on a bare stage with the mechanisms of the wings exposed. For the first five minutes the dancers carry the steps in complete silence before Nye Parry’s frantic cello kicks in. Interaction is the name of the game, as the five dancers pair up in a variety of combinations, leaning on and supporting one another. Breakdance moves sit alongside taut stretches and energetic leaps, while (in true b-boy style) those not currently dancing stand at the side to watch. And by the end of the evening, the company's full potential seems to be just that closer to hand.
