MUSIC PREVIEW Adventures In Music
Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sat 11 Nov.
Anyone who caught the RSNO Kids Prom earlier this year will know that Paul Rissman is a natural with children. Although to be fair, his easy charm wasn't lost on the adults either. So it’s good news all round that Rissman has taken over responsibility for the new improved Children's Classic Concerts. artistically programming the entire series and hosting three of the five concerts between now and March. A joint partnership between CCC and the RSNO, Adventures In Music looks set to do for classical music what Johnny Ball did for maths. 'Classical music is something that is sadly missing from most children's Iives,’ says Rissman. 'And going to a concert is almost compared with going to church or eating all your greens. What we want to show is that children can have a lot
of fun with classical music.’
That fun comes via lots of interaction with the orchestra and plenty of audience participation. But when the audience ranges from 4-12 year-olds. all of whom have adults with them who also want to be entertained, you've really got your work cut out. 'It is difficult.’ admits Rissman. 'You have to fire out lots of different hooks to the audience, so that everyone can be drawn in.’
The opening concert is all about rhythm, and Rissman has programmed an exciting range of music to demonstrate his point. 'Rhythm is the most important element in music - it makes works from different parts of the world and different periods in time sound different,’ he says. 'So the 'Time Travel' concert explores how rhythm has changed over the years, starting in the 16th century with Purcell and ending up with the theme from Mission Impossible.’
Edinburgh audiences will have to wait until December for their first look at the new-style concerts, when the RSNO return to their spiritual home in the Usher Hall with the second Adventures In Music outing, entitled 'Toy Stories’.
'There's a huge surprise in that concert which the kids are going to love,’ says Rissman. ‘Although it's quite scary, because I've never done a kids concert in the Usher Hall - but it's great that the first concert the RSNO perform back in that venue is for children; that‘s a really good start.’ (Kelly Apter)
