80 THE LIST 2—l6 Nov 2000
RAP LEGEND Gil Scott-Heron
La Belle Angele, Edinburgh, Fri 10 Nov; The Arches, Glasgow, Sat 11 Nov.
Hip hop‘s stress on authenticity, on the ‘keeping it real' so effortlesst parodied by Ali G, is ironic given its sample-based nature. One man who doesn't have to torturoust trace a route through such notions of validity is jazz iconoclast Gil Scott-Heron. While Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa quibble over who cut the first break, Scott-Heron can rightly claim to be have been rapping before either of them were out of their teens. The man himself is ambivalent about his role. ’l've often been called, unfairly so, the godfather of rap,’ he says. ‘If that's so I want to get together with the godmother and talk about these kids of ours. I can‘t remember ever rapping about killing, stealing and dealing. Heaven forbid that I ever be disrespectful to womenfolk. Then again there are people like Speech, NWA and Michael Franti that I really admire. My ego would love to think that it's my influence but these brothers are strong, beautiful and conscious people who know where they are going without having to be
influenced by the likes of me.’
Scott-Heron's arrival in Scotland, seen by many as a rare treat, is in fact something of a home-coming for the Brooklyn-raised lyricist. His father was the first black player in the Scottish league, and enjoyed a brief stint at Celtic. 'I love Celtic and Scotland because they were good to my father so playing there is always special. I don't get much news about Celtic in the USA,’ he explains, 'but I do like to keep in touch with their results.’ Having said that, it seems he doesn't take the Old Firm rivalry too seriously. 'I remember once doing a television show wearing a Rangers shirt and a Celtic scarf. That confused the hell out of everyone.’ (James Smart)
revellers, all of whom seem to have forgotten that they have work in the morning. If quality tunes and glamorous antics are your bag, Suns at Babaza are unmissable.
I Liquid Gold at Q. 5pm—3am. Free before 11pm; £5 after. Weekly. Funky tunes and club classics from Harry B., Scott McMillan and Paul Traynor at this bar-club in association with Babaza’s hedonistic extravaganza, Liquid Cool. Not to be confused with the popular ‘room deodoriser’ of the same name.
I Mas vs. Colours at Mas. llpm-3am. £8. 12 Nov only. The Mas residents take on the Colours crew for a night of epic house battling, with guests John Mancini and Steve Lawler manning the decks. Who dares wins, they say. And they’re right.
I LiILo at Reds. 10pm-3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Oscar (Mish Mash) and Harri (Subculture), sparring partners of old, join forces for some funky deep house. I Optimo at Substitute Venue (Planet Peach). llpm—3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. The good ship Optimo continues to rule the waves of the eclectic sea, a particularly violent and rough region these days. However, Twitch, Wilkes and their little black box of a first mate, Roland, are equipped with a musical cat 0‘ nine tails to whip the electro into shape if it deigns to get stroppy, and a fine techno musket affords them protection against the forces of punk, should it attempt to start a mutiny by spitting in their direction. And there’s plenty of sailor’s rum to go round. I Sin at Trash. 11pm—3am. £5 (£3). Weekly. House, garage and student classics from Jim Da Best, with drinks for £1 all night.

Oh, and there’s music too, with Mark Sherry and Paul Mendez spinning upfront, uplifting house in the main room, Naeem rocking downstairs with his hip hop selections and Paul Traynor and Naeem providing R&B cuts in the Skybar.
