REVIEW Canvas Comedy Club Canvas, Glasgow, Fri 27 Oct it *‘ki’ Sumptuous decor. table service, a legion of ladies toilets, comfortable seating and a spacious, airy atmosphere. Surely this cannot be a venue for stand-up comedy? Aren't there rules against this sort of thing? The organisers of Canvas have added a touch of class to comedy. but the question is, does it work? Are class and comedy happy bedfellows?
The opening night of Glasgow's latest comedy club proved that the two
Janey Godley outstrips unruly hecklers
can coexist. Compare Janey Godley was acutely aware of the locale transformation from former club lester's. and hailing from Easterhouse, got the evening underway by comparing the East and West End of Glasgow, to hilarious effect. Her shrill voice demanded the attention of the audience and woe betide anyone who faltered in their heed. With an accomplished line in put-downs. she quickly silenced and consistently outstripped unruly hecklers. Roland Gent was the first act to christen the Canvas stage and his irony- infused set found favour with the crowd. even if it was difficult to relate to some of his material. Second act Colin Ramone was a real diamond in the rough, targeting Scottish culture with his likeable banter and tailoring his routine to
the young audience.
Not everything was a success. as headliner Danny Bhoy discovered. His set began well in an amiable parley with the crowd. demonstrating his natural wit by discussing everything from Posh Spice to the Old Firm. but became shambolic as he failed to control jibes from a drunk minority. Why some punters think they deserve a shot of the microphone after three hours of drinking is a mystery. and the bar staff should reserve superglue mixers for this attention-seeking few.
Acts to grace the stage in the coming weeks include Ross Noble, Noel Fielding and Lynn Ferguson. so if laughs-a-plenty. hassle-free drinking and sublime surroundings appeal to you. then Canvas is worth a visit. If not, we suggest you
check your pulse. (Maureen Ellis)
Scot Dougie Dunlop is joined by Nick Findlay, Euan Mushet and compete Graeme Thomas.
