Exploring Space Until Sat 18 Nov. Free. Everything you ever wanted to know about space comes to the Museum, on loan from the Stevenage Museum, with support from Matra Marconi Space and Hertfordshire Museums. The exhibition focuses on astronomy, space exploration, constellations, the planets and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Elephant Until Sun 5 Nov. From the elephant-head god to Ganesha to Babar the Elephant, this interactive exhibition looks at the importance of the elephant in today’s environment and world cultures. Hands-on exhibits include tusks and teeth and a programme of workshops are on offer for the younger gallery visitor.

Five Thousand Days At Sea An exhibition on board the only Clydebuilt sailing ship still afloat in the UK, documenting her adventures on the high seas between 1897 and 1919.
Story In The Stones (Pumphouse Main Gallery). An exhibition looking at the impact of the industrial ages on Glasgow harbour.
Morse And More (Pumphouse Lower Gallery). A hands~on exhibition, aimed at children, looking at the world of communication. You can operate a state- of-the-art optical telegraph used in the Napoleonic wars, try out the five-needle telegraph and crank up World War II field telephones.

Old Town, New Story Until Sat 6 Jan. Residents of Edinburgh’s Old Town worked with anists from home and abroad to create a new map of the city. Using puppet—making, felt-making, batik, photography, digital technology and video, the past, present and future of the Old Town is represented.
Carnivalesque Sat 21 Oct—Sat 16 Dec. The carnival atmosphere in Western Art from the middle ages to the present day is explored in this exhibition. Featured in the display are medieval woodcuts, paintings and prints by Bruegel, James Gillary and Francisco Goya and contemporary work in the form of video work by Leigh Bowery and Paul McCarthy and sculpture by Louise Bourgeois.

Copenhagen's New Town Until Fri 27 Oct. Danish architectural photographer Jens Lindhe presents an exhibition of photographs of the busy district of Frederiksstaden in Copenhagen, which like Edinburgh’s New Town, was created in the middle of the 18th century.
THE DEAN GALLERY

Situated opposite the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Dean Gallery is entirely devoted to art of the 20th century. Formerly a 19th century orphanage, it houses a large collection of work by Eduardo Paolozzi, as well as outstanding works drawn from the National Galleries’ Dada and Surrealist collections, plus works by Giacometti, Picabia, Max Ernst and others. The upper galleries are given over to temporary exhibitions.
