however make a departure from foreign forces and instead celebrate the talents of the club’s local residenc Gareth Sommerville, Colin Cook and Mikey Stirton. In preparation, Mr Cook takes the time to show us what: in store.

I Afro-Celtic Night for Humana at Holyrood Union. 9pm—3am. £6 (£4). 28 Oct only. Features a heady mix of Celtic and African bands, dancers, drummers, cultural fodder and DJs.

I Ascension Goth Club at Holyrood Union. 10.30pm-3am. £3 (£2.50). 21 Oct. Monthly. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Well the Goths didn’t, they sacked the bloody place. These days, they’re happier attending nights of uncompromising guitar noise like this one, organised by Edinburgh Uni’s Goth and Rock Society.

Altogether more pleasurable than the name would suggest, this is a gay-friendly house, trance and techno fest hosted by Brian Dempster and Alan Joy for a loyal crowd. Following in the tradition of The Mission (Victoria Street) with three floors of alternative sounds: head upstairs for goth and industrial goings-on, to the main floor for rock, nu metal and guitar-based sounds and up to the wee front room for general weirdness, sometimes on a skate, punk or indie slant.

So from now on you’ll find an ever-changing selection of Twitch, Brainstorm, The Bill, Sandy Paris, Rob Dylan and many more supplying techno, deep house and whatever else they damn well please.

I Shebang at Wilkie House. 11pm-3am. £10 (£8). 21 Oct. Monthly. Gail Sellars pulls out the stops for a three hour set. This garage and hard house night styles itself as’the ‘feminine side of Taste’ and features Simmone Black in the backroom.

I Spectrum at Club Java. 10pm-3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. A quality shindig for Leithers and anyone with the good sense to make it down to this gorgeous venue. Your host with the most, Jo Malik, showcases vinyl gold in the murky realms of hip hop, drum & bass, reggae, R&B and mellow house.

I Tease Age at The Citrus Club. llpm—3am. £4. Weekly. Now in its eighth year, this indie stalwart flavoured with hints of soul and funk continues to draw a packed and sweaty crowd week in, week out. And if you hate smoking, the new non-smoking policy in the bar area should please you no end.

I Trade at Wilkie House. 10pm—3am. The infamous London club’s next date is 4 Nov.

I Ultragroove at La Belle Angele. 28 Oct. Monthly. Has it been a year already? Expect long-winded reminscenses aplenty at Ultragroove’s birthday celebrations. Prizes can be won, although hopefully this isn’t just an excuse for Armstrong’s to offload their mountains of scuffed leather jackets. The usual swinging sounds should be in full effect.
